Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
