The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
