Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
